Depending upon which side of the open access (OA) movement you subscribe to, the news that Yale University had decided to drop its BioMed Central's (BMC) OA membership either made you gleeful or worrisome. BMC now has 107 US member institutions and 209 international members. So far, there are no indications that a mass exodus is underway. The Partnership for Research Integrity in Science & Medicine (PRISM), a newly formed coalition, is no doubt pleased at Yale's news. At its new Web site (www.prismcoalition.org), the group describes its eight-point PRISM principles. Clearly, the goal is to thwart governmental interference into the pre-existing system.
