The National Geographic Society's Web site offers much more than just trip-planning resources. A free area of the site called the MapMachine (www.nationalgeographic.com/maps), is designed not only for home, school, and office users but also for professionals in fields such as conservation, forestry, real estate, agriculture, and health care. The MapMachine offers access to dynamic maps and geographic data organized by themes, including physical, cultural, and environmental. The Maps and Geography area also offers the mapXchange, which lets you download free maps for use with TOPO! CD-ROMs (CDs that let you create customized elevation profiles and other maps for recreational or professional GIS use), or you can post your own map files for use by the mapXchange community.
