Mirko Albani, the ESA's longterm data preservation program manager, says that "FITS is very well suited to long term storage" of documents and images for the following reasons: * It is a standard format very stable in time with only three versions since the 80's (version 3.0 in 2008). * It is backward compatible- data stored in this format many years ago can be easily read today: the golden rule of this format is 'once FITS, always FITS.' According to Knox, this has involved running skillssharing workshops at Jadavpur University.
