Abstract (Document Summary)

The name of the Pew report -- "Libraries at the Crossroads" -- accurately describes the current public library landscape. Fewer people may be visiting brick-and-mortar libraries, but a large majority fiercely defends the library as a key public institution. While there will always be a segment of the population that balks at paying taxes to fund libraries, most people view the library as valuable public asset. According to the Pew report, some 65% of all those ages 16 and older say that closing their local public library would have a major impact on their community; another 24% say it would have a minor impact.
