Kids' lives are overmanaged and overscheduled to the point that many never develop coping or problem-solving skills, often resulting in lingering psychological problems. The author finds it particularly disturbing that letting your kids roam the neighborhood is now termed "free-range parenting" and is the subject of ongoing controversy. These are the flashpoint issues that get most of the mainstream media attention. There's a lot of controversy about how much "screen time" kids should be allowed. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, today's children are spending an average of seven hours a day on entertainment media, including televisions, computers, phones and other electronic devices. No one would argue against the need for kids to develop an easy familiarity with technology.
