Abstract (Document Summary)

News Deeply ( is an A&E site with its own twist; as its name implies, it covers a single, widely followed subject in extraordinary depth, while using A&E tools to keep the topic manageable for time-constrained readers. There are now two News Deeply projects: Syria Deeply and Ebola Deeply. Each explores its complex and often tragic story with traditional news reporting, as well as with A&E tools such as event summaries, graphics, and concise backgrounders. Unfortunately, News Deeply also shares the common weakness of A&E sites, which the author has referred to in other reviews as "Facebookization." News Deeply was founded in 2012 and is run by a small group of journalists and technologists, with the mission of "innovating and improving the user experience of complex global issues." It builds information projects for private clients and also receives foundation support.
