Abstract (Document Summary)

Qwant is a system that resulted from the collaboration of French and Swiss entrepreneurs Jean Manuel Rozan, Eric Leandri, and Patrick Constant. Qwant is a contextual search engine, while Google is an advertising-oriented search system. Unlike Google, the informing idea behind Qwant is that a user wants to have her privacy protected. Qwant, similar to Ixquick, does not use cookies to follow a user's peregrinations on the web or build a user profile based on search activities. Qwant terms its privacy function the "freedom qookie". About the question on whether Qwant will dominate the European search sector in the next 2 or 3 years, the answer is no. Antoine de Saint-Exupery said, that a designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. Qwant may want to consider Saint-Exupery's observation. Qwant poses no threat to Google's dominance of the European search market.
