Following the release of SAGE Publications' State Stats data resource, feedback from the public was positive, says Todd Baldwin, executive director of online library and reference publishing, but users requested statistics on a more local level. Teachers were looking for statistics that would help students understand specific concepts that could be illustrated by using numbers from their own community. Local Stats is a rich database providing hard-to-find, vetted, and cleaned data measures about US counties, cities, and metropolitan statistical areas across a broad range of topics in the social sciences, says Baldwin. What sets Local Stats apart from similar offerings from SAGE's competitors, according to Baldwin, is the "rigorous data cleaning process" that all datasets SAGE releases must go through.
