In 1999, three professors from the University of California-Berkeley created bepress in order to meet academic faculties' growing need for technological research and publishing solutions. Since that time, the company has produced a number of services in pursuit of that goal, including Digital Commons, a hosted institutional repository, and SelectedWorks, a faculty-controlled profiling service and research announcement tool that's built into Digital Commons. New to Digital Commons is the Digital Commons Network, a tool for authors to easily explore articles within specific disciplines and sub-disciplines among the 375 repositories that use Digital Commons.
