Opportunity Scorecards Rank U.S. States
In June, Measure of America and Opportunity Nation released the "Historical Report of Opportunity," an important new study on the status of Americans. The report investigates Americans' opportunity to achieve well-being on three key metrics -- economy, education, and community -- from 1970 to 2010. It is an extension of the Opportunity Index (OI), a scorecard database that was started in 2011 to measure Americans' ability to access opportunity. Around the same time of the release of the OI, two other scorecard databases appeared. In 2010, political scientist Jacob Hacker and a team associated with Yale University introduced the Economic Security Index (ESI). Meanwhile, Freedom in the 50 States (FR50) is a project of George Mason University's Mercatus Center, a think tank that describes itself as the "world's premier university source for market-oriented ideas." Scores from OI and ESI mirror each other closely, while those from FR50 often differ greatly.
