Abstract (Document Summary)

In late June, there was quite the uproar when it was revealed that researchers had tinkered with the newsfeed content of hundreds of thousands of Facebook's users in order to experiment with mood manipulation. The author's take is that Facebook already jerks you around. Nobody really trusts the site; the most skeptical people have stepped using it. Without actually manipulating Facebook data, researchers have already determined that using the site can make you feel bad. Mostly what you see on Facebook is evidence of people's beautiful houses, adorable/successful children, dream weddings, cute animals, exciting new jobs, awesome food and drink, and fabulous vacations. Everybody else's life looks so much better than yours.
