Abstract (Document Summary)

Most people struggle to do well in one career, but Nate Silver has done very well in two. Silver, an economist by training, first succeeded as a sports analyst, using mathematical and statistical techniques to analyze the performance of baseball players. He applied his methods to US electoral politics with his blog FiveThirtyEight (five thirtyeight.com); it was named for the total number of US Senate and House seats when he started writing. Silver is a number-crunching star in the battle between data-driven analysis -- the Data -- and experience-based, intuitive decision making -- the Gut. Silver is now taking the Data versus Gut battle into journalism with FiveThirtyEight. It was launched in March 2014 as an ESPN property. Although ESPN is best known for sports media, FiveThirtyEight covers a range of current topics, of which sports is just one. FiveThirtyEight extends data journalism into a range of current interests.
