Information governance (IG) has become an important practice as organizations amass more and more digital information on their servers and hard drives. Instead of increasing their storage capacity, however, organizations can turn to IG for guidance on how to deal with the information surplus. RSD, an enterprise IG solutions provider, introduced the term in 2008. Before that, organizations referred to the practice as records management. RSD saw that records management was going to growth the point where it was going to encompass other things and other pieces of management technology. ViaLumina, an IG consulting services company, notes that because IG is a relatively new term, there are bound to be differences in its definition as organizations shape its meaning. Standard aspects of IG include compliance, information security, archiving, backup and disaster recovery, and e-discovery.
