The recent discovery of the Heartbleed bug, which affected an estimated 66% of active Internet sites, means that keeping personal information secure on the Internet is not always possible despite the best of intentions. According to a January 2014 survey from the Pew Research Center, loss of online privacy is a growing problem. Eighteen percent of Internet users have had personal information stolen, up from 11% in 2013. The percentage of Internet users who had an email or social network account compromised (21%) did not change from last year.
