The American Library Association's (ALA) Midwinter Meeting & Exhibits FAQ helpfully warns readers that January is one of the coolest weather months in Philadelphia. The conference's 12,207 attendees and exhibitors were prepared for cold weather, but the sudden, picturesque snowstorm on Saturday didn't do much to warm the hearts of some exhibitors, librarians, and authors. The second floor of the Pennsylvania Convention Center hosted 450-plus exhibiting companies, with 3,800 exhibitors reported in attendance. The combined attendance figures are the highest in 3 years, according to ALA, yielding the best turnout since the 2011 Midwinter Meeting in San Diego. A librarian walking around the exhibit hail could find free books given away in the publisher booths, examine new database, and research technology from familiar tech companies, and check out library drop boxes and media dispensers. Several exhibitors demonstrated how libraries can enrich research processes in higher education.
