In an interview, Cengage CEO Michael Hansen and his chief product officer, Jim Donohue, talked about the future of textbooks, higher education publishing in general, and Gale in particular. Hansen said textbooks in general are going to be around for a while. They believe that ultimately they are going to be substituted by the solutions that they have put under the bracket of MindTap, which essentially breaks up the textbook concept, because what is the textbook in reality is a linear way of presenting content. He thinks that that change is the crucially hardest part of this journey, and it will all come down to how well they execute around that change. Donohue said their goal at Gale is to be in the humanities space: They want librarians to think of them as the first port of call for any research needs. And that's why they have this deal with Smithsonian, which they are currently working on.
