Abstract (Document Summary)

The British Library's Business & IP Centre hosted a David Gurteen Knowledge Cafe on Wednesday, Oct 16, 2013, just after the close of the Internet Librarian International conference. According to Gurteen, knowledge cafes bring people together to have open, creative conversations on topics of mutual interest. The idea is to leverage collective knowledge, share ideas and insights, and thus gain a deeper understanding of issues. As with most knowledge cafes, the conversations were wide-ranging, as participants grappled with the implications of changes in technology and expectations that affect information professionals and libraries. The precise steps needed to survive in today's world of instant access to information and knowledge remained elusive at the end of the knowledge cafe, but many new ideas contributed to changed participant perspectives.
