With just 9 months to go before the centenary of the start of World War I, an EU-backed effort to create an online archive of digitized artifacts associated with the conflict is making significant progress. It is also throwing up challenges for those digitizing the objects. As part of this effort, Europeana has collected memorabilia at public events held in eight European countries including Germany, the UK, Ireland, and Cyprus. At these gatherings, Europeana personnel record individual stories and digitize relevant artifacts. As of September, Europeana had collected 4,000 stories and 56,000 photos of objects, letters, and diaries, which have been digitized and added to the Web site.
