Abstract (Document Summary)

Databases with the word "library" in their names are always intriguing. The author has been tracking three such Web sites for some time. The World Public Library, The Free Library and the World Digital Library are surely tantalizing names that promise great quantities of interesting and useful content. The World Public Library (WPL) claims to be the world's largest eBook provider, with nearly 3 million ebooks. WPL offers a good search engine and browsing by subject and format. Subscriptions notwithstanding, it still features lots of ads. The Free Library's (TFL) site has modest search and browse options. Site information is nearly nonexistent: There is no Help section, no FAQ, and no attribution of hook sources. The World Digital library is far less grandiose than WPL or TFL, but it is more authentic in its aspirations and more successful in achieving them.
