The author's first portable computer was a Zenith device with a very noisy keyboard. Now he has a smartphone, which is far more capable than the 1989 Zenith clamshell. As a young child, the author was fascinated with Dick Tracy's wrist communication device. Twenty years ago, the idea of combining a watch and a pager in one device seemed like a good idea. A number of challenges brought an end to the SEIKO hybrid device. The Receptor was a receive-only device. Four years after the demise of the Receptor, details of the Microsoft smart watch surfaced. The Microsoft smart watches implemented most of the features attributed to the coming wave of smart watches: network connectivity and a generous display. The excitement about more smart watches from Apple to legions of Chinese manufacturers broadcasts a strong signal. Interest in wearable computing devices is growing. Unfortunately, the technology to create nanoscale smartphones is way off in the future.
