Earlier this year, the author attended an interesting Amazon search briefing in London. The 30 attendees listened as Amazon explained its new cloud search service. In a nutshell, Amazon CloudSearch is a fully managed search service. The idea is that once the content is uploaded in an Amazon-compatible format, search is just available. The CloudSearch approach is a kissing cousin to other Amazon services, where developers pay based on the volume of data. As with any other Amazon taxi-meter-pricing model, the costs can rise if the developer takes a laissez-faire approach to certain operations. Searchdaimon, based in Norway, offers its enterprise search (ES) solution via the Amazon cloud. Searchdaimon ES is deployed as a virtual machine in the Amazon cloud. A cloud-based system may not generate much wisdom. His view is that it provides rational knowledge of temporal things. Now the challenge will be to find the specific fact needed to answer a particular question.
