Abstract (Document Summary)

The distributed denial of service attacks (DDoS) attacks accomplished their job of generating a high volume of online traffic on the author's bank Web site when she tried to access her account and producing a massive disruption of the bank's financial services. Even if no funds are actually siphoned out of any accounts, the downtime for a financial institution can be quite costly. Cyberthreats have become a big problem, so much so that Pres Barack Obama called cyberthreats one of the most serious economic and national security challenges they face as a nation. Congress is considering implementing congressional action to make it easier for the government to share classified information with companies on the front line. However, this raises a red flag over the question of privacy. The Software & Information Industry Association supports Cyber Intelligence Sharing & Protection Act because it would provide the critical necessary framework for early detection and notification of cybersecurity threats.
