Humans have an innate need to organize -- their stuff, their thoughts, even each other. Cataloging did not prove to be one of the author's strong suits. Fortunately, being an info pro means being able to take advantage of the sophisticated taxonomies and indexing done by database providers. In fact, one of the selling points of value-based online services has always been that they offer both concept indexing and free-text searching. She used to think that only librarians truly appreciated the value of subject terms and controlled vocabulary, but then she started watching the emergence of self-indexing trends within social media. Take Twitter hashtags. If Twitter has taught people nothing else, they know that a collection of information becomes more valuable when its users can engage with that information.
