Abstract (Document Summary)

The concept of alerts is one of the oldest known to business researchers. The expansion of news sources, the prevalence of breaking news on a multitude of channels, and the always present need to know the latest give alerts an appealing allure. All alerting services, however, have a major drawback They can only alert you to news occurring in sources they cover. Two important criteria for alerts are how quickly and when they are delivered. Google Alerts is used by a wide range of researchers and has been around since 2011. Recently, its performance has declined. When something doesn't work, the first step is to look for alternatives. Two alternatives that have attracted a lot of attention are Social Mention and Talkwalker. In business settings, being aware of new developments is important. Thus, alerts have a strategic value. How they might be put to use will vary by department.
