Over the past year, the author has been working on a project to identify authoritative patient education resources concerning a rare genetic blood disorder. The first part of the project was to discover all of the patient-oriented materials available, for free, via the Web. Her favorite became Trust It or Trash It?, a project of the Access To Credible Genetics (ATCG) Resource Network. ATCG is a cooperative agreement with the US National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that focuses on information regarding genetic conditions. It developed the Quality Assessment Toolbox to help people create and evaluate educational materials. She tested several tools to assure that she could identify all relevant material. Link Extractor proved to be effective in discovering both the inbound and outbound links on a Web site. It listed links on a single screen for easy access.
