New technologies and services now permeate millions of people's lives to an extent that would generally have been unimagined a decade ago. Each of these new technologies presented new challenges to users' privacy and freedom, although the speed of the changes means that possible concerns have been overlooked or downplayed in the rush to embrace the potential of the new technologies. Library and information professionals, like those in so many other professions, have embraced the opportunities offered by many of the new mobile and Web technologies. As consequences of the new technologies continue to challenge traditional information channels, it is important for the library and information community to continue to be vigilant and watch for infringements on users' rights. This needs to happen simultaneously with the struggle to stake out librarians' territory and argue for the information professional's relevance in a changing world.
