Abstract (Document Summary)

Business intelligence (BI), also known as environmental scanning, is a powerful value-added service that information professionals have long offered their colleagues. Managing the time and costs of a BI process, however, can be challenging. The author has found a combination of available online tools that meet information professionals' needs for a minor monetary investment while still being time-efficient. The tools require minimal effort for input, distribution, and maintenance. The Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise is a research and consulting organization. Housed at The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (UNC) and affiliated with the Kenan-Flagler Business School, the institute promotes economic development, entrepreneurship, and competitiveness from local to state levels up to international interests. From her perspective, people want to provide services identified by the information audit, but the emphasis needs to be on speed, agility, minimal investment of budget dollars, and copyright compliance.
