Ebooks seriously undermine the value of libraries in each of these functions. First, there's the nonownership problem which only lets libraries provide patrons access to some portion of the vendor's collection as long as annual license and maintenance fees continue to be paid. If a library should falter in paying, its whole ebook "collection" simply vanishes - as if it had never existed.
