The following tech trends are worth watching, and some of the new tools and technologies are going to be deployed behind the firewall-next week, next month, or next year. Metasearch or federated search engines allow users to search heterogeneous resources including licensed databases from a single search interface. Link resolvers are based on the OpenURL Framework and transmit bibliographic information via hypertext links in order to connect users to the full-text content. This desire to connect people and ideas in an organization has led to a strong interest in new social software tools. Weblogs are one type of social software that are attracting a lot of attention. Wikis are another collaborative tool for Web writing that is moving into the limelight. A sister technology to Weblogs is RSS (Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary), an XML-based format for distributing headlines and news feeds. The other social software tool gaining a toehold behind the firewall is instant messaging.
