According to Southern Miss Librarian and Archives Specialist Yvonne Arnold, the new mascot was named Seymour d'Campus after the title of the 1984 World's Fair mascot, "Seymour d'Fair," who that year was played by former Southern Miss mascot Jeff Davis.
