Abstract (Document Summary)
Why the infant mortality rate among African-Americans is so high -- babies of black women die in infancy at more than twice the rate of those born to white women nationally -- has eluded researchers. Studies show that poverty, education, drug use and domestic violence correlate to prematurity and low birth weights, the primary causes of infant deaths.
