The school board has continued to face financial hardship because of costs associated with its recently- closed desegregation lawsuit, rising retirement costs and a decrease in state in federal funding, officials have said. A cost cutting measure that would have required employees seeking to use current and accumulated sick leave to verify their medical condition with a physician chosen by the school board failed by the same lines.
