Abstract (Document Summary)

Jackson is first occupant of land that will one day be called Randolph. 1739 - Morris County created from northern portion of Hunterdon County. 1740 - Quakers from England move to the area. 1753 - Town's name derives from well-to-do Quaker Hartshorne Fitz-Randolph, who buys 1,000 acres in the Mine Hill area. 1754 - Walnut Grove -- soon to be named Mount Freedom -- is founded. 1758 - Friends Meeting House -- the oldest known house of worship in Morris County -- is built on Quaker Church Road, where it still stands as an historic landmark. 1805 - Randolph officially becomes a township by breaking away from Mendham Township. 1806 - First township committee meeting is held. 1850s - Brotherton Homestead near Quaker Church Road and Center Grove Road is a station on the Underground Railroad for runaway slaves. 1853 - Ironia founded. 1869 - Dover separates from Randolph. 1880s - President Chester A.\n
