Mary Joe Fernandez led an all-American advance into the semifinals of the Eastbourne, England, grass-court tournament with victories. Fernandez, the No. 2 seed, beat seventh-seeded Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia 6-3, 6-4. and will face Lori McNeil in the semis.
According to [Barbara Drinkwater], the stress of competition can lead female athletes to severely cut their caloric intake in the hope of staying fit and thin. That, in combination with heavy training, can cause them to miss their menstrual periods. Continued obsession with weight can lead to anorexia nervosa or bulimia.
