Newport News Police Officer James William Sherman, 40, turned himself in at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail Thursday night, said James City County Deputy Police Chief Stan Stout. Sherman, from Newport News, is charged with one count each of indecent liberties with a child and object sexual penetration involving a child.
Stout said the victim is a girl under the age of 16. The offenses took place at a James City County residence between June 2005 and July 2006. Stout said Sherman is only charged in connection to one specific incidence of abuse.
Newport News Police spokeswoman Holly Tepper said Sherman has worked for the department for nine years as a patrol officer in the city's north precinct. He is on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
