IN his book "Growing Up," Russell Baker; the New York Times columnist, described the kitchen table of his child hood. It was in Belleville, N.J., during the depths of the De

pression. Baker was living with his mother and sister, in an extended family of aunts and uncles. There was no television, no money for going out, few places to go anyway. Yet Baker remembers those days with affection and warmth.
