"People would say, 'Oh its an ethnic conflict,' or, 'It's about natural resources,' but it didn't seem to tell the whole story," she said, adding she spent years studying and visiting the nation as part of her doctorate, interviewing rebel groups, government officials, victims of violence, aid groups and scholars.
