Abstract (Document Summary)

Whether CBS's "[Bette Midler]" survives its first season remains to be seen. But "Bette" -- her new album -- looks to have a long shelf life. Packed with strong and varied material, "Bette" finds Midler in an almost transcendental state of grace. Midler makes good use of a simple, whispery voice that mines the lyrics for emotional pauses and dramatic restraint (atypical for the usually booming Bette). She slows down R&B charmers like "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" and "Shining Star" to good effect. And who knew that Teddy Pendergrass' "Love TKO" was ripe for revival?
