Abstract (Document Summary)

Brad McCrimmon is 34 and Chris Pronger 18. McCrimmon is stocky; Pronger is tall and lanky. McCrimmon is a stay-at-home defenseman; Pronger likes to rush the puck.

The Whalers expect a lot of McCrimmon (5 foot 11, 197 pounds), who arrived in the off-season from Detroit after the Whalers sent defenseman Steve Konroyd to the Red Wings in March. McCrimmon, given a two-year contract for $700,000 a year, will see about 20 minutes of ice time a game and should be a stabilizing force on the blue line.

Providing Pronger signs a contract -- it's no sure bet at this point -- [Paul Holmgren] plans to pair McCrimmon and Pronger this season. When Pronger has the puck and makes his move, it will be McCrimmon staying back to cover for his partner.
