25 HAVE CONTRACTED TB BACTERIA MUST TAKE MEDICATION TO WARD OFF THE DISEASE
[4N EASTERN Edition]

Hartford, Conn.
Abstract (Document Summary)
Tuberculosis, or TB, is caused by bacteria called mycobacterium tuberculosis. It can attack any part of the body but usually attacks the lungs. The disease can be spread through the air when a person with TB of the lungs or throat coughs or sneezes. People nearby may breathe in these bacteria and become infected. In the 1940s, scientists discovered the first of several drugs now used to treat TB, once the leading cause of death in the United States. As a result of the new drugs, TB began to disappear in the United States, but it has returned in recent years. People who are latently infected with TB do not feel sick, do not have any symptoms and cannot spread the disease. They may, however, develop TB at some time in the future. People with the disease can be treated and cured if they seek medical help. People who are infected but not yet sick, can take medicine to prevent the disease from developing.
