The recommendation is not expected to significantly change decisions about whether to prescribe hormones such as estrogen to post-menopausal women, said Dr. Anthony Luciano, director of the center for fertility and women's health at New Britain General Hospital.

The heart association said the evidence does not justify prescribing hormones to women already diagnosed with heart disease. And Luciano said that for some women, hormone therapy could actually increase the risk of blood clotting.
