Abstract (Document Summary)

[Toni Fatone] said that most of the flu vaccine ordered by member institutions was to have come from Chiron Corp., which on Tuesday announced that its entire inventory of vaccine bound for the United States -- about 48 million doses -- had been frozen by British health officials. The California-based firm previously had reported that some of its vaccine had been contaminated, but company officials and Washington regulators expected that most of the vaccine would be shipped.

The prospects for this year's vaccine supply remained bleak on Wednesday. U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson said that vaccine maker Aventis Pasteur had located another 1 million doses of vaccine for the general public, bringing the number of available vaccine doses to 54.4 million.

Some hospitals, including Yale-New Haven, have received partial shipments from Aventis Pasteur and officials wonder whether they will receive the rest. Federal officials have asked Aventis to consider diverting some of its unshipped vaccines to areas where vaccine is scarce. On Wednesday, the vaccine maker said only that it would be "communicating with our customers as soon as possible about the status of their orders."
