Abstract (Document Summary)

Dr. Matthew Cartter, epidemiology program coordinator at the state Department of Public Health, said that the flu vaccine supply typically falls off at this time of year. The continuing strong demand -- fueled by news reports of serious flu in the Southwest -- could mean that all of the state's remaining vaccine will be used.

While private and government health plans routinely cover the costs of a flu shot, FluMist is not as widely covered, and the out- of-pocket costs for FluMist are higher. The shot is about $18, but a dose of FluMist could cost $60 to $75, although there is now a $25 mail-in rebate available. (Rebate information is available at www.flumist.com.)

[Jamie Lacey] said early research suggests that the FluMist vaccine may be more effective against the troublesome "drift" form of flu virus than the injected vaccine.
