Abstract (Document Summary)

Wireless phone usage in the United States is soaring. There are more than 69 million wireless phones in service, up from 14 million in 1993, according to the Washington-based Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association.

Exactly how many of those are in the hands of teenagers is difficult to tally. But teen usage of wireless phones came into national view in April when terrified students hiding from gunmen in Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., used them to call their parents, police and television stations.

Many major wireless service providers say they don't track usage among teenagers. Customers must be 18 or older to purchase a wireless phone contract from providers; otherwise, parents must sign the contract.
