Abstract (Document Summary)

Aetna U.S. Healthcare said Friday it will phase out coverage for in- vitro fertilization in most states, despite a national trend toward more insurance for infertility treatment.

Aetna's decision is expected to have little effect on Connecticut because few employers have the health plans with in-vitro fertilization. But patients and their advocates Friday voiced sadness at the company's decision, noting that without insurance, many couples must give up their dreams of a family.

U.S. Healthcare has included in- vitro and three other advanced reproductive techniques in its HMO plans since at least 1995 but will drop them because it is costing the company too much, said spokeswoman Jill Griffiths, who had no payout figures. Aetna Inc. now owns U.S. Healthcare, but Aetna's own plans have not included in-vitro.
