WEST NILE VIRUS DEFIES PREDICTIONS
[7 SPORTS FINAL Edition]

Abstract (Document Summary)
The highest risk for human infections from West Nile in the Northeast comes in August and September, and [Theodore Andreadis] said mosquito traps around the state are turning up about the same levels of virus as found last summer, when six Connecticut residents were seriously sickened by the disease, one fatally. Last week, New York City reported its first human case, another warning that Northeast residents remain at risk of contracting the potentially deadly encephalitis, or swelling of the brain. In Israel, 29 people died in 2000 during a West Nile outbreak, and last year the virus claimed two Israeli victims. Most scientists, citing genetic tests of the virus, point to Israel as the source of the West Nile strain now raising havoc in the southern United States. More birds have tested positive for West Nile this year than last year -- 39 from 19 towns, compared with 24 birds in 11 towns during the same time period in 2001 -- according to state health officials. Andreadis said the virus is being found in approximately the same percentage of trapped mosquitoes -- about three of every 1,000 Culex pipiens mosquitoes -- as last year.
