At a time when the music he helped pioneer, techno, is widely predicted to break out big in the mainstream, Moby has retreated to the punk rock of his Connecticut roots. For Moby, his new Elektra album "Animal Rights," which shifts from calm, classical-style instrumentals to raging rock, is "a reflection of the music I've been listening to over the last couple of years. And over the last couple years I haven't been listening to electronic dance music. When Moby took the stage at Lollapalooza and played "Purple Haze" or some other unexpected song, he tapped into the rocker deep within him. The first single off "Animal Rights" is a version of a new wave rock song that deeply influenced him, "That's When I Reach for My Revolver" by the Boston band Mission of Burma.
