In Game 1, the Red Sox scored seven runs in the fifth inning and held on for a 7-5 victory with four scoreless innings from the bullpen.

In Game 2, the bullpen was even better. After starter Jeff Suppan allowed four runs in three innings, the bullpen combined for 10 scoreless innings. New closer Tom Gordon made his debut with one scoreless inning, earning his first save since May 21, 1993.

The Red Sox -- 26-15 since the All-Star break -- used five relievers in the second game. After Suppan allowed a three-run homer to Jason Giambi to make it 4-1 after three, John Wasdin pitched four innnings. Jim Corsi followed with three before Ron Mahay and Joe Hudson carried the Red Sox in extra innings.
