Groovy: Waltzing with Austria's gruner veltliner
Citizens' Voice
-
Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
Don't worry about asking for it. The first syllable of "gruner " is just like "groovy." Groo-NER Velt-LEAN-er. But this wine isn't neon and disco. Gruner typically is restrained, with delicate flavors ranging from tropical and peach to citrus, mineral and spiciness. Elegant rather than extravagant, it's like Strauss' "The Blue Danube" in a glass. For the fans who call it "GV" or "gruner v" or "groo-v," gruner is an outsider, the indie rock of grapes, one on the cusp of hitting it big thanks to its subtle charm and food-friendliness.
