To this day, you'll never find Hanger wearing socks that match, whether he's behind the pulpit at the nondenominational church he founded in 1984, checking in on the girls' middle school he opened in 1999, writing his latest book, sitting at a piano belting out jazz tunes, doting on his two daughters or hanging out by the pool with some of his 15 housemates at his Gothic mansion on the western edge of downtown Asheville.
